Medellin is Colombia's second largest and most prosperous city with a population of over two million. In the past Medellin was
known only as the home of Pablo Escobar, the worlds most notorious drug dealer and for its high rate of murders and
kidnappings. However Medellin is now one of the safest cities in Colombia and more and more tourists are discovering its
delights. The people of Medellin, known in Colombia as 'paisas' are among friendliest in the country, the climate is also almost
perfect with the daily high at 30 and low at around 20. The temperature hardly varies during the year due to Medellin's altitude of
1600 metres and its closeness to the Equator. Several years ago Medellin got less than a handful of tourists a week. Now at any
one time there are over 200 backpackers in the city. Most end up staying a lot longer than they had intended. I'm still here after
six years. Doh!
