How do I extend my tourist visa?
Upon entering Colombia by land or air you will be given between 30 and 90 days in the country. To get the most you really need to ask for the full
ninety days. Tell the immigration agent you want to see a lot of the country and you have some friends in the country etc etc. Normally you will only
be given 60 days.
If you need an extension to the time you were given upon arrival you will need to visit a DAS (toursim police) office in any city a few days before
your visa expires. At the DAS office you can get a 30 day extension. This will cost COP $60,600. You can only get a one month extension at a
time. However you can extend several times by repeating this process for up to six months in total in the country in any calender year.
Below is a list of things you will need and steps to take to extend your visa at any DAS office in the country.
1. Go to any GNB SUDAMERIS bank branch and pay the amount of the fee to extend your visa COP $63,800
To pay this amount you need to use this number [ #63017784 Codigo 103 ]
Just give that number and the amount to the bank teller and they will help you with the rest
. Write your name and address (hostel address) on the back of the slip they will hand you which is proof of payment
Get a photocopy of this payment slip
2. Get 4 passport style photos (type 3 by 4 inch in colour)
3. Photocopy the main page of your passport, the one with your birthdate and name etc. (two copies)
Photocopy your entry stamp into the country (two copies)
Photocopy the receipt for the money you earlier paid in the bank (two copies)
4. DAS normally ask for a ticket out of the country. However this is really not necessary and you should be able to talk
your way out of it. Explain that you are leaving from Argentina or something or show them a electronic ticket. If you do have the
ticket, photocopy it twice and take the copies with you.
5. Now you have all the above done you can go to the local DAS office. Remember most DAS offices close between 11am
and 2pm so I'd advise laying off the piss for one night and getting onto this at 8am starting with the bank!!
Wear trousers and shoes not shorts when you go to the DAS office.
At DAS you will be given a copy to fill out. Once filled out you will need to photocopy that twice as well. Outside most DAS offices
are photocopy shops so this is not a trouble.
This whole process from start to finish should take around 2-3 hours. Good luck its a pain in the butt.
The Medellin office of DAS is located in Belen. A taxi from my hostel in Poblado will cost you 6,000 pesos or so. Or you can take the bus Circular
Sur 303 from Las Vegas St. for around 1.4
00 pesos and it leaves you a one minute walk from the ofice. Ask the bus driver where to get off..
The Colombian police are generally very helpful. If you have something lost or stolen in Medellin and need to file a police
report for insurance purposes go to the address to the right which is located in Poblado suberb.
