Santa Rosa de Cabal is a beautiful wee town in the middle of Colombia's
coffee country, less than five hours
south of Medellin. Its claim to fame is that very nearby are two
spectacular hot pool complexes. The town itself is
a pleasant enough place to stay in also. There is especially a great
atmosphere on the weekends and on
Colombian holidays. There are numerous places to stay but personally I'd
be careful to avoid Colombian holiday
periods, weekends no prob. A lot better when the place is more peaceful.
The hot pools have the least amount of
people in the mornings and around six/seven in the evening. Also while
hanging around the central plaza try a
cheese filled crepe type thing. Yum. Bottom right side of plaza.
Where to Stay
option 1: in the town of Santa Rosa itself there is the Hotel Turistica.
15.000 pesos per night...direction to come
option 2: Five minutes walk below the hot pools complex itself on a road
twelve kms from town is the Cabanas de JC. Cost 20.000 pesos per
person regular room. 30.000 pesos per person room with cable television
and hot water. They will cook you meals.
Where to stay option 2: Hotel Termales, A spectacularly set hotel is at
the end of the road fifteen minutes walk after the hot pool complex. The
same owners this place also has very nice termales including a hot water,
waterfall. The hotel complex is perfectly integrated with its
surroundings. Love it. It is not cheap at over 100.000 pesos per person,
but hey you get what you pay for.
option 3: If you've got the money then splash out and stay in the
spectacularly set Hotel Termales. Ten minutes walk above the main
thermal pool
complex. It may well set you back between 90.000 and 130.000 pesos
depending on the season but this is money well spent. Includes all meals,
access to the pools and lastly thats per person by the way. I'll be staying
there in June so will let all know how it is.
Where to stay option 3: Las cabanas de
JC. Cute little Swiss Alps type
accommodation units. Very pleasant place
to stay. The family will cook you up a meal
when you want. The trout option is 7000
pesos. The are numerous animals around
especially birds, including strangely enough
two flamingos. You can also camp here by
the river as I did last year. The cabanas are
on five minutes walk from the hot pools. You
can also rent horses by the hour for around
10.000 pesos.

rom Pereira: there are buses every fifteen minutes at least from Pereira
north to Santa Rosa de Cabal. Cost is 1.500 pesos or so I think.

From Manizales: also buses every fifteen minutes to Santa Rosa de Cabal.
Cost about 4.000 pesos. (forty minutes)
From Medellin: take a bus to Pereira and tell the ticket counter lady and
the bus driver that you want to get off early at Santa Rosa de Cabal.

Either because they don't know about the place or they think it's too far away, very very few tourists visit Mompox. It could
even be that less than five backpackers a week make the effort. Pretty sad.
